The old saying about having a “great roof over your head” is sometimes taken for granted. The roof is the first line of defense for just about everything that gravity brings your way, so it’s with great importance that the roof is always in a great shape; especially in the Northeast region. American Quality Remodeling has this belief and wants to make sure you are educated on the warning signs of a poor roof.

One of the biggest telltale signs that your roof needs to be replaced is when you see the black streaks. You might think that the streaks are from normal wear and tear but that’s a common mistake. The discoloration is actually a form of algae called Gloecapsa Magma. This mold can be caused from moisture buildup, usually on the north side of your roof, where it’s shadier and the harder for the dew to dissipate.

If you think that a power wash will be your solution, that’s also not true. The roof algae feeds off of the dead organic material in the shingles, and breaks down the material. Once the shingles breakdown you’ll find parts of your roof in your lawn, your neighbor’s pool; and not on the most important part, your roof!

No one wants a roof that isn’t functional on their house. American Quality Remodeling has various solutions.
